The Gibbsville Cheese INEX Legends/Wisconsin Legends Racing Dirt Series
Dennis Thompson 9-16-06
The Gibbsville Cheese INEX Legends/Wisconsin Legends Racing Dirt Series was in action for the Season Championship Night at The Raceway at Powercom Park on Saturday night. In the battle for the track championship, Eric Barth of Sauk City held down an eleven-point lead over Joel Wyttenbach of Sauk City going into the evening.
Ric Mattie of Franksville raced into the lead from the pole position at the start of the 20-lap A-Main. Brad Weber of Rolling Prairie rocketed from his outside fifth row starting position to take over the top spot on lap two. The scramble for position was on for the rest of the field with Bethany Wyttenbach of Plain, Greg Hartlaub of Sheboygan Falls, Eric Barth and Joel Wyttenbach working their way through traffic. Weber began to build up a lead while Joel Wyttenbach powered his way into second on lap eight. As the field worked lap nine, the caution flag waved for a spin by Brian Peterson of Mukwonago. The caution allowed the field to close in behind Weber for the restart. Back under green, Weber continued to lead running the low groove while Joel Wyttenbach worked the topside. Bethany Wyttenbach and Eric Barth fought it out for third right behind the leaders. Joel Wyttenbach, determined to do all that he could in his bid to repeat as track champion, put heavy pressure on Weber. On lap thirteen, Wyttenbach found good bite as he exited turn two and slipped by Weber to take over the lead. Nelson Stewart stalled in turn four on lap sixteen to bring out the second caution of the event. The green flag waved on the restart but it was only one lap before the caution waved again for debris in turn two. That set the stage for a three-lap dash to the end. Back under green, Joel Wyttenbach remained out in front the rest of the way to record his eighth win of the season. Brad Weber followed closely behind in second. Eric Barth drove to third and claimed his third track championship by five points over Joel Wyttenbach. Kevin Brill of Oostburg moved up to fourth after Bethany Wyttenbach had the misfortune of spinning in turn four on the final lap. Joey Johnson of Slinger was fifth. In heat race action earlier in the evening, Joel Wyttenbach, Joey Johnson, and Brad Weber drove to wins.
