Gibbsville Cheese INEX Legends/Wisconsin Legends Racing Dirt Series7-29-06
Dennis Thompson
It was a tough night for the Gibbsville Cheese INEX Legends/Wisconsin Legends Racing Dirt Series at the Raceway at Powercom Park on Saturday night. The crash filled A-Main event was shortened to 10 laps when the race exceeded its time limit.
The first incident occurred on the opening lap when Steve Boelter of Verona spun in turn four. While the field scrambled to avoid Boelter, Mike Mueller of Waupun was not as fortunate as the others as he made contact that would cause damage severe enough to sideline Boelter. Mueller, fortunately, did not receive heavy damage and was able to continue. The field lined up for a complete restart and when the green flag waved, Phil Van Tatenhove of Sheboygan Falls grabbed the lead. However, the caution flag waved again with only one lap complete for a four car incident in turn four involving Joey Johnson of Slinger, Eric Barth of Sauk City, Warren Ropp of Kalona, IA and Greg Hartlaub of Sheboygan Falls. Only Ropp was able to rejoin the field for the restart. Back under green, Van Tatenhove led while the rest of the field battled for position. Brian Peterson of Mukwonago was tagged by another car on lap three and spun to bring out the caution for a third time. Phil Van Tatenhove led once again on the restart, but now Joel Wyttenbach of Sauk City was moving up quickly using the outside groove. On lap six, Wyttenbach powered his way by Van Tatenhove to take over the lead. Terry Walber of Sheboygan and Nic Savaglio of Machesney Park, IL brought out the caution for the fourth time in turn four. That incident was followed by a spin in turn two that brought out the caution and the checkered flag because the event had exceeded the allotted time for the race. Joel Wyttenbach recorded his fourth win of the season. Phil Van Tatenhove took second ahead of Adam Reed of Beaver Dam and Bethany Wyttenbach of Plain. Warren Ropp recovered from the first lap incident to finish in fifth.
Phil Van Tatenhove and Warren Ropp were victorious in heat race action earlier in the evening.
